Founder Director, NAB India Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies
True leadership is measured not by personal success but by the lives transformed along the way. For Ms. Shalini Khanna, Founder Director of the NAB India Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies, leadership has always been about creating opportunities, breaking barriers, and empowering individuals to realize their fullest potential.
With over two decades of dedicated service in the field of disability inclusion and women’s empowerment, Ms. Khanna has emerged as one of India’s most influential social entrepreneurs and advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities. Her journey is a remarkable testament to the power of vision, compassion, and unwavering commitment to social change.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by visually impaired women, Ms. Khanna established NAB India’s Centre for Blind Women and Disability Studies in New Delhi—the first residential centre in India exclusively dedicated to visually impaired women. What began as a pioneering initiative has grown into a transformative movement that has empowered more than 4,000 blind women and positively impacted over 28,000 persons with disabilities across the country.
Driven by her belief that economic independence is fundamental to dignity and inclusion, Ms. Khanna introduced two internationally acclaimed livelihood programs in India—Discovering Hands from Germany and Talking Hands from Japan. These innovative programs opened new pathways for visually impaired women to build successful careers in healthcare and wellness services, proving that disability should never be a limitation to professional excellence.
Her entrepreneurial vision reached another milestone in 2022 with the launch of Blind Bake, a groundbreaking café initiative operated entirely by visually impaired chefs. More than just a business venture, Blind Bake challenged societal perceptions and demonstrated the immense capabilities of individuals often overlooked by mainstream employment systems. The initiative's success led to its expansion into prestigious venues, including Taj Hotels and TCS campuses across India, becoming a powerful symbol of inclusive entrepreneurship.
Beyond organizational leadership, Ms. Khanna has played a significant role in shaping India's disability inclusion landscape. As the former Chairperson and current Governing Council Member of the Skill Council for Persons with Disability (SCPWD), she has contributed extensively to developing national skilling standards and policies that create sustainable opportunities for persons with disabilities. Her expertise and advocacy have also earned her a place on international platforms, including representation at the United Nations Zero Conference, where she championed the cause of disability rights and inclusion.
For over fifteen years, she has also served as an External POSH Investigations Expert for leading corporate organizations, reinforcing safe and equitable workplaces while advancing gender-sensitive organizational cultures.
Ms. Khanna’s exceptional contributions have received national and international recognition. Among her notable accolades are the Top 75 Women Transforming India Award (2022) by NITI Aayog and the Women Entrepreneurship Platform, the Spirit of Top Hospitality Award (2024) by Condé Nast for Blind Bake, the Rashtriya Prerna Doot Award (2021), and the Chiranji Lal Dhanuka Memorial Service Award (2021) for Excellence in Humanitarian Services.
At the heart of her work lies a leadership philosophy grounded in confidence, empathy, and purpose.
“When women lead with confidence, empathy and purpose, they don’t just transform organizations—they inspire generations to dream bigger and achieve more.”
Her message resonates deeply with aspiring women leaders everywhere:
“To every woman pursuing her dreams, trust your abilities, embrace your unique perspective, and never be afraid to take your place at the table. Leadership is not defined by a title; it is defined by the courage to create positive change, uplift others, and keep moving forward despite challenges. Your voice matters, your journey matters, and your impact can inspire countless others.”
Through her pioneering initiatives and relentless advocacy, Ms. Shalini Khanna continues to redefine what inclusive leadership looks like. Her journey reminds us that true empowerment begins when we create spaces where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to learn, lead, and thrive.
As a changemaker, mentor, and visionary leader, she stands as an inspiration for women across India and beyond—proving that when inclusion becomes a mission, transformation becomes inevitable.
