As part of its International Women’s Day campaign, “Every Woman Matters,” She Business Time proudly celebrates inspiring women entrepreneurs who are transforming passion into purpose. One such inspiring story is that of Sampurna Ganguly, founder of Silkykraftz, a brand dedicated to preserving the heritage of Shantiniketan craftsmanship while empowering women artisans.
Based between Kolkata and Shantiniketan in West Bengal, India, Sampurna’s journey beautifully reflects the harmony between modern education and traditional art. With a BTech and PGDM background and professional experience in multinational companies, she once followed a conventional corporate path. However, her heart always remained connected to India’s rich artistic heritage.
That passion eventually led her to create something meaningful—not just a business, but a movement to preserve art, empower women, and promote sustainability.
A Dream That Began with Heritage
In 2018, Sampurna founded Silkykraftz with a simple yet powerful vision: to keep the legacy of Shantiniketan leather craft and Batik art alive while creating sustainable employment opportunities for artisans.
For her, the business was never just about selling handcrafted products. It was about protecting an art form that carries the soul of Bengal.
Shantiniketan craftsmanship is known for its intricate hand-tooling and Batik designs, but like many traditional crafts, it faces the risk of fading away in a fast-changing world. Sampurna believed that these timeless techniques deserved a place in the modern market.
Through Silkykraftz, she set out to prove that heritage and modern entrepreneurship can grow together beautifully.
Empowering Women Through Craft
At the heart of Sampurna’s mission lies women empowerment. She envisioned workshops where women artisans could work with dignity, creativity, and financial independence.
Today, these workshops are filled with energy—women sharing stories, learning new designs, and transforming leather into beautiful handcrafted pieces.
For many of these women, the opportunity means more than income. It brings confidence, recognition, and a stronger voice within their families and communities.
Sampurna believes that when women are empowered economically, they become powerful drivers of social change.
The Challenges of a First-Generation Entrepreneur
Starting a business without prior entrepreneurial experience was not easy.
As a first-generation entrepreneur, Sampurna had to learn everything from scratch—from managing production and operations to building a brand and understanding customer expectations.
There were moments when designs did not work, supply chains faced disruptions, or business decisions felt uncertain. But each challenge became a lesson.
Through these experiences, she discovered a powerful truth:
Resilience is built through consistency—showing up every day despite uncertainties.
Without many role models in her field, she became a pioneer woman entrepreneur in the Shantiniketan craft industry, creating her own path and inspiring others along the way.
When Tradition Meets Modern Design
One of the key breakthroughs for Silkykraftz came when Sampurna realized something important about modern consumers.
People appreciate the authentic soul of traditional art, but they also expect modern functionality and style.
By blending traditional Batik craftsmanship with contemporary designs such as modern crossbody bags and lifestyle accessories, Silkykraftz created products that resonate with today’s global audience.
This fusion allowed artisans to see their heritage skills celebrated in a completely new way.
A Story That Travelled Across Continents
Among the many memorable moments in Sampurna’s journey, one experience stands out.
At a craft fair, a customer approached her stall carrying a Shantiniketan leather bag she had purchased nearly three years earlier from Silkykraftz.
With pride in her voice, the customer said,
"This bag has travelled to three continents with me. It’s my lucky charm because people everywhere stop to ask about the hand-tooling."
She had returned to buy three more bags as graduation gifts for her daughter.
For Sampurna, that moment was deeply emotional. It proved that the craftsmanship created by artisans in Bengal had found appreciation across the world.

Sampurna’s dedication to sustainability, heritage, and women empowerment has earned her several prestigious recognitions, including:

Lessons from the Journey
Entrepreneurship has transformed Sampurna’s perspective on leadership and purpose.
What began as a journey filled with uncertainty has evolved into a mission rooted in confidence and responsibility.
Today, she no longer sees herself merely as a business owner. Instead, she views her role as a custodian of a traditional craft that deserves to thrive in the modern world.
She believes that strong organizations are built through empowerment rather than control, and that a brand becomes truly meaningful when the people behind it grow together.
For Sampurna, profit is simply the by-product of a healthy ecosystem where creativity, culture, and people flourish.
