Dalimi Chaudhury Deka: Building a Sustainable Food Enterprise

Some entrepreneurial journeys begin with a business plan. Others begin with a moment of recognition. For Dalimi Chaudhury Deka, Founder of DBD Enterprise, that defining moment came in 1992 when she won first prize in a sweet-making competition in Coimbatore. What seemed like a simple achievement became the foundation of a lifelong mission—to transform Assam's traditional food heritage into a sustainable enterprise while creating meaningful livelihood opportunities for women.

Determined to convert her passion into a profession, Dalimi pursued specialized training in food processing and preservation at the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati. Equipped with technical knowledge and a clear vision, she established DBD Enterprise in 2012 from her home in Dakhingaon, Kahilipara, Guwahati, Assam.

Starting with limited resources and only two women employees, Dalimi focused on producing authentic, hygienic, and high-quality traditional food products. Through consistent dedication and customer trust, DBD Enterprise has grown into a respected food-processing enterprise offering a diverse portfolio of pickles, jams, jellies, fruit juices, spice powders, sweets, and traditional Assamese snacks.

For Dalimi, entrepreneurship has always been about more than business growth. It is about creating opportunities. Her enterprise has empowered women by providing sustainable employment, enabling them to become financially independent while preserving traditional culinary practices. Today, DBD Enterprise supports the livelihoods of nine women and continues to demonstrate how grassroots enterprises can drive inclusive economic development.

Beyond her role as an entrepreneur, Dalimi is a highly respected Master Trainer in food processing and preservation. She has trained more than 15,000 aspiring entrepreneurs, women, youth, and self-help groups across Assam and the Northeast. Through collaborations with institutions including IIE, NSIC, MSME, ASRLM, NIRDPR, Rotary Club of Guwahati, Quest Alliance, and several government departments, she has equipped thousands with practical skills that enable self-employment and entrepreneurship.

Her commitment to promoting regional entrepreneurship has also taken her to numerous national and international exhibitions, trade fairs, and conferences, where she has showcased the richness of Assam's traditional food products. Working alongside organizations such as FICCI, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, IIT Guwahati, NERAMAC, SRISTI Ahmedabad, and various Agriculture and Horticulture Departments, she continues to strengthen the food-processing ecosystem and expand market opportunities for local producers.

Dalimi Chaudhury Deka's journey is a powerful example of how passion, perseverance, and purpose can create lasting impact. By blending traditional knowledge with modern entrepreneurship, she has built not only a successful enterprise but also a platform for women's empowerment, skill development, and community prosperity.
