For Jahnavi Barua, Founder of Peeyonee, the journey was inspired by a desire to reconnect with her roots, address her own health challenges, and revive the forgotten nutritional treasures of Northeast India.
Raised and educated in Guwahati, Jahnavi completed her Master's in English Literature and Language before building a successful corporate career with Singapore Airlines and Wipro Technologies in Bengaluru. Her professional journey also included mentoring young professionals as a communication and personality development trainer. While literature taught her the beauty of language and human emotions, the corporate world sharpened her leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Yet, life had different plans.
The COVID-19 lockdown became a defining moment. Like many, Jahnavi found herself reflecting on what truly mattered. Battling her own health concerns and witnessing a growing need for healthier lifestyles, she decided to step away from the comfort of a corporate career and venture into entrepreneurship—a field she knew little about but was determined to master.
The decision marked the beginning of a remarkable transformation.
Inspired by the incredible health benefits of the indigenous roselle plant (Hibiscus sabdariffa)—a traditional ingredient once commonly consumed but gradually disappearing from everyday diets—Jahnavi envisioned a brand that could bridge heritage with modern wellness. This vision gave birth to Peeyonee, a health and wellness beverage brand dedicated to promoting naturally sourced, locally grown roselle blended with carefully selected herbs and spices.
For Jahnavi, roselle is more than just an ingredient; it represents nature's wisdom. Rich in antioxidants and traditionally valued for its numerous health benefits, the humble roselle plant has the potential to contribute significantly to preventive wellness. Through Peeyonee, she is introducing this indigenous superfood to contemporary consumers in a refreshing, convenient, and appealing format.
Building a brand from scratch as a first-generation entrepreneur came with its share of uncertainties. Every stage—from product development and sourcing to branding, compliance, production, and market acceptance—required learning, resilience, and unwavering determination. Yet every challenge strengthened her belief that meaningful businesses are built on purpose rather than profit alone.
A major milestone came when Jahnavi was selected among the Top Three Winners of the Tejaswini Ideathon 2024, validating both her business idea and her commitment to creating social impact through innovation.
Today, Peeyonee stands at the intersection of wellness, sustainability, and community empowerment. The brand actively supports local farmers by sourcing indigenous ingredients, encourages women’s participation in the value chain, and promotes environmentally responsible practices while preserving traditional knowledge that risks fading away.
