1.Can you share with our readers your journey into the circular economy space and what inspired your interest in this area?
Coming from a family of farmers, I learned to interact with the environment from a young age, thanks to my parents. In our household, we engaged in practices that, at that time, were not recognized as circular economy. Subsequently, I dedicated myself to working on environmental issues, and it was in 2017, following the OECD recommendations, that I led the development of Costa Rica's roadmap to advance toward the Circular Economy.
2. As a woman leader in the circular economy field, what unique perspectives or approaches do you bring to the table?
In my country, I have advocated for the implementation of metrics as a necessity to understand the changes and impacts of the circular economy. I was a pioneer in creating the first national environmental account for bioeconomy. Having data enables us to make more informed decisions, correct course, and promote actions more effectively.
3.What are some of the key challenges you've faced as a woman leader in this industry, and how have you overcome them?
I believe the main challenge was integrating various actors and sectors, seeking common goals, and ensuring all parties had a voice. I achieved this by actively listening, understanding the needs, and ensuring their inclusion.
4.Could you highlight some of your notable contributions or initiatives within the circular economy space that have made a positive impact?
Certainly, I believe the National Circular Economy Strategy of Costa Rica is the prime example. We managed to integrate actors from various sectors into national objectives and goals with which everyone agreed.
5.How do you see the role of women entrepreneurs evolving in shaping the future of the circular economy?
In Costa Rica, women entrepreneurs are playing a crucial role in shaping the future of the circular economy. Their leadership in innovation, promotion of inclusion and equity, development of networks and collaborations, as well as their ability to inspire future generations, are significantly contributing to the advancement of sustainable and circular practices in the country
6.In your opinion, what are some of the most promising opportunities for women-led businesses within the circular economy framework?
Women entrepreneurs in Costa Rica can excel in areas such as sustainable product design, waste management and recycling, sustainability consulting services, and the development of green technology. These opportunities allow them to drive innovation and sustainable growth in the country.
7.How can businesses, governments, and society at large better support and encourage women's participation and leadership in advancing the circular economy agenda?
Implementing policies that promote gender equality in the workplace, providing mentorship and networking opportunities, and investing in education and training programs specifically targeted at women in this field.
8.What advice would you give to aspiring women leaders who are interested in pursuing a career or business venture in the circular economy sector?
First, they should stay positive and believe in themselves. They should seek out women's groups for mentorship and support networks to develop leadership and problem-solving skills. And they should remain committed to their goals despite any challenges they may face.
9.Can you share any personal experiences or anecdotes that have shaped your understanding of the importance of sustainability and circularity in business?
Yes, of course. Due to issues related to the contamination from agrochemicals in a pineapple plantation, my father's farm's water was affected. For many years, I refrained from eating pineapple as a personal protest against this fact. However, nowadays, there are companies very responsible throughout the entire process, not only producing the fruit but also implementing a whole circular economy system within the production process. Now I can eat pineapple without any worries
10. Looking ahead, what do you envision as the future of the circular economy movement, and how do you see women playing a pivotal role in driving its growth and innovation?
